How to Find Recently Released Chatham County Inmates
Sheriff Richard S. Coleman runs the Chatham County Sheriff's Office and posts two recent booking lists, a 24-hour list and a 72-hour list. Neither is labeled as a released-inmates list, and the visible booking fields do not include release dates. That means a person whose name drops off the recent list is not automatically released. The booking entry may simply have aged out of the 24 or 72-hour window. For older entries, the Sheriff's 24/7 lines are the actual source of truth.
To verify a release after a recent booking, call the Sheriff. Receiving and Discharge / Booking answers at (912) 651-3700. The Front Lobby is (912) 652-7785. The Shift Commander is (912) 652-7710. A typical release follows one of a few routes: a bond posted through an approved method, a court disposition or judge's order, or a transfer to state custody under a hold. Bond posting can be a bonding company, cash, credit or debit card, online cash bond, property bond, or an out-of-county bond. Hold flags, probation issues, or state custody can keep a person in even when the local bond is set low or at $0.
Release timing is not published by hour in the official Chatham sources. The Sheriff's Inmate Handbook covers the property and paperwork steps inside the facility, but the public-facing pages do not post a clock for when a release walks out the door. Patience and phone confirmation are the rule.
Setting Up Release Notifications via VINELink
VINELink is a free victim notification and custody-status tool that covers Georgia and most other states. A user picks a state, searches by name or offender ID, and registers for notifications by phone, email, or text where the integration allows. Official Chatham Sheriff's pages do not state whether the Sheriff's booking system feeds VINELink in real time, so the tool is best treated as a backup notice layer rather than the only source.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Options / Format Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| State | dropdown / map | yes | Select Georgia. |
| Search type | tab / filter | unspecified | Offender / custody or court / case, depending on state integration. |
| Offender name | text | optional | First and last name. |
| Offender ID / booking # | text | optional | Use if known. |
| Registration method | web form | optional | Notifications by phone, email, or text where available. |
| Search | button | n/a | Runs the search. |
VINELink lives at https://www.vinelink.com/. A victim or family member who wants to know the minute a release is processed should register through VINELink and call the Sheriff's Front Lobby as a backstop on the day in question.
Searching State and Federal Released Inmates
Local jail tools do not cover state prison or federal custody. A Chatham defendant who is sentenced to state prison moves to a Georgia Department of Corrections facility, and a federal defendant moves to the Bureau of Prisons system. Each has its own locator. Use the state locator at gdc.georgia.gov or the Georgia.gov front door at georgia.gov/find-offender. Use the federal locator at bop.gov/inmateloc.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Options / Format Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | text | optional | Search by offender name. |
| Description | filter | optional | Age and other identifying information may be used. |
| ID | text | optional | GDC ID or similar state identifier. |
| Case number | text | optional | Search by case number when known. |
| Search | button | n/a | Searches current GDC facility offenders. |
The GDC offender search returns photos when available. GDC warns that the agency provides no warranty as to accuracy or completeness, and that users should verify through written correspondence with Inmate Records and Information, PO Box 1529, Forsyth, GA 31029. The GDC office address is 300 Patrol Road, Forsyth, GA 31029, and the inmate concerns phone line is (404) 656-4661.
The federal locator covers a different population. The BOP search form lets users find people by BOP register number or by name plus filters.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Options / Format Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find By Number | tab | optional | Search by BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS Number. |
| Type of Number | radio / dropdown | yes for number search | BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, INS. |
| Number | text | yes for number search | BOP Register format #####-###. |
| Find By Name | tab | optional | Name search. |
| First | text | required for name search | Required indicator shown. |
| Middle | text | optional | Optional. |
| Last | text | required for name search | Required indicator shown. |
| Race | checkbox / dropdown | optional | American Indian, Asian, Black, White. |
| Age | text | optional | Numeric age. |
| Sex | radio / dropdown | optional | Male, Female. |
| Search | button | n/a | Runs the search. |
The BOP result page returns a defined set of fields. Each is short and easy to read.
- Name — legal name as recorded by the BOP.
- Register # — federal BOP register number.
- Age — current age.
- Race — race code.
- Sex — sex code.
- Release Date — scheduled release; First Step Act review can shift this date.
- Location — facility or status such as Released or Not in BOP Custody.
The BOP locates federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. A label of Released or Not in BOP Custody without a facility means the person is no longer in federal custody, though the person may still be on supervised release, in another system, or in state custody.
The federal locator front door sits at bop.gov/inmateloc.

The BOP page is the right stop for any Chatham defendant whose case moved to federal court, including drug, firearm, or interstate fraud matters.
Verifying Release in Person or By Phone
When the online tools do not give a clear answer, the Sheriff's Office is the source. The Front Lobby at (912) 652-7785 stays open 24/7. Receiving and Discharge at (912) 651-3700 can confirm whether a person is still in booking, has been released, or has been transferred. The Shift Commander at (912) 652-7710 handles supervisor-level questions. Calls go faster when the caller has the DIN, the arrest number, the date of birth, and a rough arrest date in hand.
Out-of-county bonds, cash bond returns, and disposition paperwork all go through dedicated lines. Cash bond return paperwork is accepted 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Sheriff's Office. The in-person process requires the original bond payer, current government photo ID, and certified proof of disposition from Recorder's, State, Superior, or Magistrate. Mail requests need a notarized affidavit and the certified disposition, mailed to Chatham County Sheriff Office, Cash Bond Return, 1050 Carl Griffin Drive, Savannah, GA 31405.
The Sex Offender Registry
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation runs the state sex offender registry as the central repository under O.C.G.A. 42-1-12. The public site lives at https://state.sor.gbi.ga.gov/sort_public/. Users must accept the Conditions of Use before searching. The registry supports name searches and location-based public-awareness searches. GBI says registry information is updated continuously, but the data comes from many other agencies, so changes occur frequently and GBI does not guarantee accuracy or completeness.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Options / Format Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conditions of Use / I agree | button | yes | Must accept before search. |
| Name | text | optional | Search by offender name after accepting terms. |
| Address / location | text | optional | Registry supports location-based searches. |
| County / city / zip | filter | optional | Use Chatham or Savannah when available. |
| Search | button | n/a | Runs the search. |
The GBI main phone is (404) 270-8399 and the visit address is 3121 Panthersville Road, Decatur, GA 30034.

The Conditions of Use screen is the first barrier; users have to accept the terms before the search form loads.
Parole and Probation Information
Release from local custody is not the end of supervision for many defendants. The Georgia Department of Community Supervision oversees probation and parole. A person released from a Georgia Department of Corrections facility may continue on parole or post-release supervision. A person sentenced to probation in Chatham State or Superior Court reports to a community supervision officer under the supervising court's terms.
The Sheriff's booking list shows the probation-violation route in plain terms. Charges under O.C.G.A. 42-8-38 for probation violation appear in the entries, sometimes as the only charge that brought the person back in. That is a useful signal for family members who do not know whether a person was rearrested on a new charge or on a violation of an existing case. Either way, the supervising court is the entity that decides what happens next, not the Sheriff.
Reentry Resources in Chatham County
The Georgia Department of Corrections runs an Offender Info section that includes guidance on using a Georgia release card, the Federal Bonding Program, inmate education, and family resources. The Circuit Public Defender and the Chatham County Misdemeanor Defense office can help eligible defendants with pending cases, although they do not handle general reentry social services. Local legal aid groups provide civil legal support for evictions, benefits, and family matters that come up after release.
- GDC Offender Info — release card, federal bonding, education, reentry services.
- Department of Community Supervision — probation and parole supervision.
- Circuit Public Defender — felony representation for eligible defendants.
- Chatham County Misdemeanor Defense — misdemeanor representation through the indigent defense office.
- Local legal aid — civil legal support for housing, benefits, and family law.
Civil Rights Restoration After Release
Georgia generally restores voting rights after a person completes the full felony sentence, including incarceration, probation, and parole. The Secretary of State's voter registration page is the right confirmation source before final reliance. Firearm rights are a separate, higher-stakes matter. Felony firearm restoration in Georgia involves the State Board of Pardons and Paroles and other steps, and the safer path for any individual case is direct counsel rather than self-help.
Record restriction under O.C.G.A. 35-3-37 is the Georgia version of expungement. The GBI record restriction page explains that arrests after July 1, 2013 require contacting the prosecutor, while older arrests go through the arresting agency. Restricted records remain available to courts and criminal justice agencies, but private background checks generally stop returning them.
